Tailor welded blanks (TWB) are the most common blank technology used in integrated door ring production. Hebei Haoxinran Machinery designs hot stamping dies for tailor welded door ring blanks, enabling optimized material distribution along the ring for maximum crash performance at minimum weight.
A tailor welded blank consists of multiple steel sheets of different thicknesses, grades, or coatings laser welded together into a single flat blank before stamping. The welding is done in the flat state, producing a continuous blank that can be stamped and hot formed as one piece.
For door rings, the TWB approach allows different material properties in different sections of the ring:
Thicker, stronger material in the B-pillar upper section for intrusion resistance
Thinner, more ductile material in the lower B-pillar for energy absorption
Optimized gauge along the A-pillar and roof rail sections
Different steel grades where needed for specific performance requirements
Using tailor welded blanks for door rings provides:
Right Material in the Right Place: Material thickness and grade are matched to the load requirements of each section.
Weight Optimization: No excess material in low-load areas, saving weight compared to uniform-thickness rings.
Fewer Parts: One continuous ring replaces multiple reinforcements and their connecting welds.
Weld Location Control: Laser weld lines are placed in low-stress areas to avoid structural weaknesses.
Coating Flexibility: Different coatings can be used in different blank sections if needed (e.g., galvanized in corrosion-prone areas).
Hot stamping dies for tailor welded blanks require special attention:
Blank Location: Precise blank positioning is critical because the weld line must land in the correct location in the finished part.
Thickness Transition: The die must accommodate step changes in material thickness across the weld line without damaging the material.
Weld Line Movement: During stamping, material flows and the weld line shifts. Die design accounts for this movement to keep the weld in the intended final position.
Cooling Distribution: Different material thicknesses cool at different rates, requiring zone-controlled cooling in the die.
TWB door rings require quality control of both the stamping and the weld:
Weld penetration and quality inspection of the laser welded blank
Weld line position verification after stamping
Mechanical property testing across the weld zone
Dimensional inspection of the finished ring
Haoxinran has experience designing hot stamping dies for tailor welded blank door rings. We work with your blank supplier to ensure the die design accommodates the TWB process and produces high-quality door ring components.
