Our trim steels are the precision-cutting elements that define the final edge geometry of stamped automotive parts. We source premium tool steels and precision machine them to tight tolerances to ensure clean, accurate cuts and long service life.

What Are Trim Steels

Trim steels (also called cutting blades, knife edges, or trim inserts) are the wear components in trimming dies that actually cut the excess material from stamped parts. They are precision-ground pieces of hardened tool steel mounted in the die holder. When the press closes, the trim steel edge shears through the sheet metal, trimming the part to its final outline.

Material Selection

We use various tool steel grades based on application requirements:

• D2 (1.2379): Cold work tool steel with excellent wear resistance and moderate toughness. Good for general trimming of mild steel and aluminum.

• Cr12MoV: Chinese standard equivalent to D2, widely used in automotive stamping dies with good cost-performance balance.

• SKD11: Japanese tool steel similar to D2 with improved toughness and through-hardening properties.

• P/M Tool Steels: Powder metallurgy steels such as Vanadis 4 Extra or D2 Special for high-volume production and high-strength steel trimming.

• Tungsten Carbide Inserts: For extreme wear resistance in very high volume applications.

Precision Manufacturing

Our trim steels are manufactured to exacting standards:

• Wire EDM cutting for complex contour shapes with tight tolerances

• Surface grinding and profile grinding for precise edge geometry

• Proper heat treatment and stress relieving to achieve specified hardness (typically 58-62 HRC)

• Edge honing and preparation to prevent chipping and extend blade life

• Pre-drilled mounting holes and bolt patterns for easy installation

Trim Steel Geometries

We produce trim steels in various configurations:

• Straight blades for simple straight-edge trimming

• Contour blades matching complex part outlines

• Cam trim blades for angled trimming operations

• Insert-style blades that bolt into die holders for easy replacement

• Reversible blades with two cutting edges for extended life
