Cam Units & Cam Slides for Stamping Dies

Cam units allow stamping dies to perform horizontal or angled cutting and forming operations using only vertical press motion. Hebei Haoxinran Machinery designs and manufactures precision cam systems that enable complex part geometries to be stamped in a single die.

What Cam Units Do

A cam unit converts the vertical motion of the press ram into horizontal or angled motion through a wedge and slide mechanism:

• Horizontal Piercing: Punch holes in vertical surfaces of parts that cannot be reached vertically.

• Angled Trimming: Trim edges that are not perpendicular to the press direction.

• Side Bending: Bend flanges on side walls and angled surfaces.

• Notching: Side notching and cutout operations on part edges.

Cam Unit Components

A complete cam system consists of:

• Cam Driver (Wedge): Mounted on the upper shoe, this angled block contacts the cam slide as the press closes.

• Cam Slide: The moving block that travels horizontally or at an angle, carrying the punch or trim steel.

• Wear Plates: Hardened surfaces between driver and slide that reduce friction and allow easy replacement when worn.

• Return Spring: Spring or nitrogen gas spring that returns the cam slide to its starting position as the press opens.

• Positive Stop: Hard stop that accurately positions the cam slide at the end of its stroke.

Cam Design Considerations

Proper cam design requires:

• Cam Angle Selection: Typical cam angles are 30-45 degrees. Steeper angles produce more horizontal force but shorter stroke.

• Force Calculation: The horizontal cutting force required determines the cam size and press tonnage needed.

• Stroke Length: The cam must travel far enough to complete the operation without over-travel.

• Return Speed: Return mechanism must bring the slide back quickly enough for the next stroke.

• Guiding Accuracy: Slide must maintain precise alignment throughout the stroke to keep punches and dies aligned.
